Does hashing run on a server?+

No. SHA-256 and SHA-512 use the Web Crypto API in your browser. MD5 uses spark-md5, loaded only when you select MD5 or open the MD5 generator.

Why compare multiple algorithms?+

Different systems expect different digests. This page lets you verify the same string under MD5, SHA-256, and SHA-512 without switching tools.

Is MD5 still useful?+

MD5 is not safe for passwords or signatures. It remains common for legacy checksums and cache keys. Use SHA-256 or SHA-512 when security matters.

Can I hash an empty string?+

Yes. An empty input produces well-known empty digests for each algorithm — useful when debugging serializers or APIs.

What encoding is used for the input text?+

UTF-8 bytes, matching typical server-side hash implementations for Unicode strings. Emoji and non-Latin text hash the same way most Node and Python libraries do.
